DEPARTMENT: CAMP GIFFORD POSITION TITLE: PROGRAM LEADER: SMALL ANIMAL FARM STATUS: SEASONAL, FULL TIME SUPERVISOR: DISCOVERY CAMP DIRECTOR

MISSION STATEMENT:

SCOPE OF POSITION:

Establish & administer a safe, enjoyable, and educational program of teaching campers about farm life using activities that are in harmony with the goals and objectives of Camp Gifford.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Graduate, some college preferred but not mandatory
  • Interest, knowledge, and skills in farming
  • Experience working with children preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Possess good leadership skills
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Be able to pass a child safety background check
  • Be detail oriented and well organized
  • Must be knowledgeable in the areas of children/personnel safety, planning, problem solving, and crisis intervention

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Plan, organize, and implement a daily Elective Program which teaches campers about small farm animals (goats, chickens, bunnies, etc.) and gardening
    • Create an environment that leads groups to success
      • Know the type of group and the specific needs of the group you're working with
      • Maintain open, friendly, and professional relationships with participants
      • Maintain an attitude of fun and excitement
      • Use encouragement and positive reinforcement in all situations
    • Teach fun and interesting activities for groups ranging from 8 to 20 campers and assume responsibility for supervision and instruction for Salvation Army Troop programs (badge classes & Music/art classes) as assigned by program schedule
      • Write age-appropriate lessons that encourage hands on learning
      • Clearly communicate the instructions for each project in a fun and creative manner
      • Have all equipment and samples prepared before the campers' arrival
      • Ensure the safety of campers and staff
    • Lead briefing and debriefing sessions with each group
      • Communicate the objective of the activities
      • Observe groups' responses to each activity and formulate appropriate questions to encourage group learning and growth
      • Initiate and facilitate final wrap-up session at the end of each session to sum up the experience and point campers to Christ in transferring their learning
    • Maintain order and cleanliness in the farm and garden
      • Maintain a high standard of safety, developing rules for conduct in program area
      • Brief all campers on farm rules at the beginning of each camp session
      • Maintain good organization of supplies and feed while ensuring that materials are not wasted or misused
      • Maintain an inventory of supplies and materials to ensure that a good program is conducted for all sessions. Complete inventory of supplies and equipment at the end of summer.
      • Conduct inventory prior to opening of camp, determine equipment and supply needs
      • Conduct an inventory at the close of camp providing camp administration with a list of equipment and supplies to assist in projecting needs for following summer
    • Train and assist counselors so that they will be familiar with the rules, programs, and crafts available to campers
    • Provide ongoing care for the animals at the animal farm. Plan for the care of the animals when camp is not in session.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Exhibit effective Christ-like conduct and service as an appropriate example for campers and staff
  • Give support to the total camping program performing all other duties required to provide a consistently excellent program
  • Attend and participate in all camp programs as required including, but not limited to evening programs, chapel activities, and staff meetings
  • Follow all policies and procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in your person and living quarters
  • Assist with cleanup of the total camp at the end of teach session and at the conclusion of the summer

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
  • Grasp, push, pull objects, and reach overhead
  • Operate a telephone and computer
  • Lift up to 25 lbs
  • Understand verbal and written information
  • Sweep, clean, and perform other janitorial tasks as needed

COVID-19:

Once a conditional offer has been made and then accepted by the applicant, The Salvation Army may then ask specific questions about vaccination status, if applicable. If the applicant requests an exemption, then processes described in this summary should be followed.

Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area. Voluntary +1 and +family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered.

Life and Voluntary Options. An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.

Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months' service time.

Paid Vacation:

  • Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions
  • Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions
  • Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months' service time

Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays + 1 floating holiday per year
